My mom died last Sunday, at the age of 86.

I haven't really kept up with the people here, or even events, but in this case, I'm feeling very lonely without her here.

She went into the hospital on May 7th or so, and I knew that she wasn't coming back out. She had deteriorated to much. None of us suspected cancer, but that was the main cause. And she had stopped smoking nearly eight years ago!

She had been in constant pain since February, ever since she had a spinal fusion done, but the pain wasn't from that.

What none of us knew was, she had a tumor growing on her spinal cord, as well as in her lungs, putting pressure on her larynx, robbing her of the power of speech. She simply couldn't manage any volume after a while.

The memorial is this Saturday. She insisted that there not be a viewing, and that she be cremated, so that's what is happening.

I hope that everyone here is doing okay, especially Paul.

I am so very sorry to hear this; I remember we got on to the subject of your mum some time ago (I think we were discussing smoking)!  I lost my own mother over 20 years ago but I remember what a fundamental, primal grief it was.  It was also very unexpected  (she was in her early 50s and died of a sudden, massive stroke).

I'm reluctant to say too much as I don't know you well and things must still feel unbearably raw.  However, you have my deepest sympathy.  Mother-daughter relationships are all unique and with the loss of a mother, most of us are never quite the same person again.  We lose something of ourselves as well; something irreplaceable.

Remember to take the best care possible of yourself.  X
